History[]
He was a member of the Kashiwaya School becoming Shinuchi rank.
Kiroku was drafted into the imperial Japanese army and would meet the leader of the yakuza in Rabaul, where in his own words, Kiroku saved his life.
After the war, Kiroku returned to Japan safely where he had a tearful reunion with his master, Miroku Kashiwaya the 4th, who stated that he was truly glad to see Kiroku back.
Years after, Kiroku became Miroku the 4th's most treasured disciple despite his freewheeling style that contradicted the classics that his master upheld. Kiroku was unquestionably considered the "heir apparent" of the Miroku name by the entire Edo rakugo world.
One day he was eating at Soba Shop Kikuhiko when one of the waiters named Issho Arakawa refused to bring him another cup since he didn't usually pay, however he was stopped by the owner of the place Kiyoe Kikuhiko, as a thanks, Kiroku left the place.
Later, Kiroku would see the fight between the yakuza members and the waiters of the soba shop so he would interrupt the fight saving both of them since the yakuza leader respected him, at the end of the fight Kiroku tells the waiters that he will take them to a place known as Yasakatei revealing himself as a rakugoka.[1]
However, Miroku the 4th, who upheld rakugo's purity, could not accept that the Miroku name would be passed on to either Kisoba or Rokuen as they used to have a feud with the yakuza. Thus, Miroku demanded that Kiroku expels his 2 disciples, Kiroku would decide not to expel his disciples so Shiguma, Issho and him were expelled from Kashiwaya School, with the three of them on the streets having lost everything, Kiroku decides to make a name for themselves by founding a rakugo school with Rokuen and Kisoba as the first students.[2]
After being expelled from the Kashiwaya school, Kiroku decided to create a new school, since he could not use his old name he decided to use a forgotten name since no one inherited it, changing his name to Shiguma Arakawa and becoming the fifth Shiguma Arakawa. Kiroku would later inherit Shiguma's Art and his name to Rokuen.[3]
Kiroku would die naturally, having a funeral attended by several of the important figures of rakugo and his disciples crying for his death.
